Nectarine Peach Shortcakes

IMG_6930

{Nectarine Peach Shortcakes}

Whenever our family goes to the beach we always seem to pack nectarines and peaches.  Most of the time they are devoured but this time around we had a few left over so I chopped them up and incorporated them into yummy shortcakes (cream scones).  Seriously, nothing beats some warm scones and a cup of coffee for breakfast. Yum.

So since I have no formal training in the kitchen (self & family taught) I have learned a few tricks along the way.  Cutting the butter into the flour mixture when making scones is a very very  important step to create a flaky consistency.  For the longest time I didn’t have a pastry blender so a little trick I learned that works the same way is to coarsely grate the butter into the flour using a cheese grater.  Then get your hands all dirty and work the mixture until the crumby texture forms.

 Then to make these, I literally just formed 10 dough balls with my hands and slightly pressed them down on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. (P.S. I highly recommend you flour your hands or else you will be a gooey mess)  You can easily use a cookie cutter but I kind of love the effortless look it makes when you free hand them.  Enjoy.

DIY Hair Ties

IMG_6883

{Chain Hair Tie DIY}

I was so inspired by Jenni’s chain hair ties from I Spy DIY that I decided to recreate them myself.  They were so simple to make and so chic that I may never use a normal hair tie again.  I went out and bought a chain necklace for $1, a few hair ties, and grabbed some pliers from my basement.  Using the pliers, I separated eleven links from the necklace.  Then, I opened the first and last links and reattached them to the hair tie (as shown).  Finally, I folded the hair tie in half and wore it around my wrist. Amazing.

April Beauty Favorites

April Beauty Favorites
{April Beauty Favorites}

1.Chloe Eau De Parfum Spray

2. Victoria’s Secret Pink – Fresh & Clean – All Over Body Mist

3.Daisy  By Marc Jacobs Eau-de-toilette Spray

This cold weather needs to move on outta here so the rest of the world and I can start complaining how hot it is outside.  Seriously though, this weather needs to clean it up.  I spoke too soon…..the weather is now amazing outside. Very funny mother nature, veryyyy funny.

Anyway, this month I am going to talk about my April beauty favorites- perfume style.  My first beauty favorite is the 1) Chloe Eau De Parfum Spray.  I love this spray- it is so fresh & so clean. Also, the scent lasts forever and the bottle is super cute. Winner all around.

My next favorite is the 2) Victoria’s Secret Pink Fresh & Clean body mist.  Last month I went into Victoria’s secret and left with way more than anticipated.  Am I the only one this happens to?!  Needless to say, I left with this Pink body mist and love it.  I spray a little on if I am about to run out of the house, head to the gym, or want a light scent.  Also, it is reasonably priced which makes the purchase much easier.

Lastly, 3) Daisy by Marc Jacobs is so so great.  The scent is sweet and light and lasts forever like the Chloe perfume.  Also, the classic notes in this perfume make it perfect for the spring/summer weather.  How cute is the bottle by the way?

Hidden Gems

jimmy{Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon Taping at NBC}

I have had a very eventful month and I am very excited to share some of my hidden gems.  Last Thursday, Brian and I had the opportunity to see the taping of Jimmy Fallon at NBC.  Jimmy Fallon’s tickets are always sold out and I happened to get lucky.  It was so much fun and we saw some very awesome guests- Russell Crowe, Joan Rivers, and The National.  If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out .  There is one part in the episode where they show the audience and you can see us- if you watched it, were you able to spot us?!

Hope your enjoying the first few weeks of spring!

A Weekend in Ithaca

Ithaca

A couple of weekends ago my parents and I went to Ithaca, New York, for my sisters swim meet. My friend, Jaclyn, decided to come along  with us, which added even more fun to the party.   Ithaca is only about a three and a half hour drive from our house, but it was just so nice to get away for the weekend.  We started off the weekend by heading over to the swim meet, then to Kilpatrick’s Publick House for some lunch where we had their fish and chips, sheppard’s pie, and burgers. Yum.

After we absolutely stuffed ourselves on some lunch, we set out for some local sight seeing around Ithaca before the second session of the swim meet started. We happened to stumble upon Buttermilk Falls State Park, which was such a fun time!  It actually happened to be the first time I saw a waterfall and was super excited despite that fact that it was almost frozen over.

Next, we headed over to a local food store to pick up some groceries for dinner.   As we were checking out, I asked the cashier how to get to Cayuga Lake- one of New York’s Finger Lakes.  After a little bit of navigating we made it, and let me just tell you, it was  perfect.   When we got there, the sun was setting and the reflection off the frozen lake was breathtaking.

March Beauty Favorites

March Beauty Favorites{March Beauty Favorites}

1.Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm  “Shameless”

2. Essie smooth trick deep-conditioning cuticle oil

3.Essie “Big Spender

I cannot believe it is already March.  Seriously, where did the time go?

My first beauty favorite is the 1) Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in the color “shameless.”  I am totally in love with this new crayon lip craze because they are the perfect balance between a lipstick and a lip balm.  Let me start off by saying that this color can be a bit intimidating when looking at it on the shelf since it is a deep purple but I swear it is such a great color for a glam look.  I give it a big thumbs up as far as texture and color go.

My next favorite is the 2) Essie deep conditioning cuticle oil.   One of my best friend and I regularly go for manicures together- it’s our thing.  Can you blame us?  But, whenever we fall off the manicure bandwagon my cuticles get so dry that they look and feel terrible.  In between manicures I started using this Essie cuticle oil and it is seriously impressive.  After I used it, I saw immediate results and my cuticles were significantly better.  I even made my best friend try it for a second seal of approval- making it two thumbs up for this gem.

Lastly, 3) Essie in the color “Big Spender” is my final March favorite. It is the perfect dark fuchsia color for the transition of winter into spring.

Classic Crumb Cake

Crumb Cake{Crumb Cake}

Over here in the Tri-State area, we have been buried in snow for what seems to be forever.  Once the snow is shoveled and the ice finally begins to melt, the snow just decides to keep on comin back.  Seriously, what is up with this weather?

Trying to save myself from another diagnosis of cabin fever, I picked up my Martha Stewart’s Cakes cookbook and began to bake away. (Obviously, the only solution).  Anyway, now that we got the snow drama out of the way, let me tell you about this crumb cake.

I like crumb cake but it is not normally my first choice of yummy treats- put ice cream in front of me and the crumb cake normally doesn’t stand a chance.  BUT, this recipe was sooo good that, unfortunately, I must admit that I ate it for breakfast and dessert.  Yeah, that good.

Hope you enjoy this crumb cake as much as I did.

I also would like to mention that I didn’t use cake flour.  I had a ton of all-purpose flour already in my house and wanted to use it up.  So if you have all purpose flour in the kitchen, it is totally fine for this recipe as long as you use the conversion:  1 cup of cake flour = 1 cup of all-purpose minus 2 tablespoons (1 cup – 2 tbsp).  Now you have a cake flour equivalent without having to go out and buy it, voilà!  Enjoy!

February Beauty Favorites

IMG_4255{February Beauty Favorites}

1. Shea Cashmere Hand Cream: Country Chic

2. Dairy Association Bag-Balm

3. Olay Night Recovery Cream

I could easily move to Florida. The cold city weather goes right through my bones and not to mention leaves my skin so dry that half of my day is spent applying lotion (Ok I’m obviously exaggerating- but not really).  That is where my mid-winter, February, beauty favorites come into play.  Since I often fall victim to the winter skin dryness spell, I’ve pretty much become a moisturizer guru.

Let’s start with my first favorite which is 1) Shea Cashmere Hand Cream by True Blue Spa.  This stuff is like silk… or I guess you could say cashmere, and moisturizes so well without being greasy. Double win.  My next favorite is 2) Bag-Balm.  Originally this salve was used to soften cow udders- yep, I said cow udders.  I use this stuff on really dry skin, for example, chapped lips, elbows, knees, and even my hands.  This salve is not only good at moisturizing within minutes it helps heal very dry cracked skin too.  My last favorite is the 3) Olay Night Recovery Cream.  Every night in the winter I use the Olay Recovery Cream as a way to hydrate my face while I sleep.  Many face lotions just don’t cut it in the winter but this works wonders.

Three cheers for moisturized skin in the midst of winter.  Hydrate away little gems.

DIY Monogrammed Wine Glasses

IMG_4228

{DIY Gift Set: Monogrammed wine glasses paired with red wine}

Valentines Day is coming up and it is my favorite holiday. Don’t ask me why- it could be because when I was little my mom and dad always seemed to include my sister and me on their Valentines Day “date night.” So, from a young age it was less of the romantic holiday and more of a holiday to express how much we love the family and friends in our lives.

Last week I was in a super crafty mood and made the cutest DIY Valentines Day basket:  monogrammed stemless wine glasses paired with a bottle of red wine.  Etching the wine glasses puts a personal touch on the gift set and was so easy that anyone can do it, pinky promise.

What you’ll need: 2 stemless glass wine glasses (my local dollar store had them- crazy),Glass Etch Cream, paintbrush, stencil, and rubbing alcohol.  Since I couldn’t find any monogrammed stencils I liked in particular, I printed a monogrammed letter and taped it to the inside of the glass and used it as a guide. So if you can’t find what you’d like in stencil form…do what I did, simple as that!

collageNext, following the directions on the class etching cream, I rubbed glass surface with rubbing alcohol, then carefully painted the monogram using the paper guide behind it, let the cream dry for 15 minutes, then washed it off.

I am positive a valentine will love this thoughtful gift set- I mean who wouldn’t.  Don’t forget to comment and subscribe below. Happy Tuesday!
