A Weekend in Ithaca

A couple of weekends ago my parents and I went to Ithaca, New York, for my sisters swim meet. My friend, Jaclyn, decided to come along  with us, which added even more fun to the party.   Ithaca is only about a three and a half hour drive from our house, but it was just so nice to get away for the weekend.  We started off the weekend by heading over to the swim meet, then to Kilpatrick’s Publick House for some lunch where we had their fish and chips, sheppard’s pie, and burgers. Yum.

After we absolutely stuffed ourselves on some lunch, we set out for some local sight seeing around Ithaca before the second session of the swim meet started. We happened to stumble upon Buttermilk Falls State Park, which was such a fun time!  It actually happened to be the first time I saw a waterfall and was super excited despite that fact that it was almost frozen over.

Next, we headed over to a local food store to pick up some groceries for dinner.   As we were checking out, I asked the cashier how to get to Cayuga Lake- one of New York’s Finger Lakes.  After a little bit of navigating we made it, and let me just tell you, it was  perfect.   When we got there, the sun was setting and the reflection off the frozen lake was breathtaking.

Hidden Gems

{New Years Day, 2014}

Every New Years Eve we ring in the New Year at our family beach house.  For those of you who are new to Gems and Gelato, I first talked about our beach house experience here, way back when I first started blogging. Celebrating the New Year down the shore has turned into a great tradition and amazing memories.  And as for waking up to the beautiful beach on the first day of the New Year- well, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Hidden Gems

I am so in love with the zoo.  You probably saw my fall bucket list last week and visiting the Bronx Zoo was on the list.  I am proud to say Brian and I made it happen and snapped some great pictures of NYC hidden gems along the way.  At the zoo we walked so much (it seemed like a marathon) that our legs felt like jello by the time we got to the Gorilla forest.  As a reward for all our marathon walking, we ate steak and lobster mac and cheese at at our favorite restaurant for dinner.  It was only necessary.  Yum.

Now it’s time to cross an item off the fall bucket list.

Fall Bucket List

Hudson River Park

{Hudson River Park, NYC}

Every season I write a personal bucket list.  This time I felt it was a great idea to share it with all of my beautiful Gems and Gelato followers.  This list in particular is an aggregate of Fall festivities as well as various things I have been meaning to accomplish over the past year.

1. Learn to crochet- One of my best friends made me a gorgeous crochet blanket a few weeks back.  It wasn’t until then that I discovered she has an amazing hidden talent — crocheting.  During this fall season, I hope to learn the basics from my bestie (she doesn’t know yet) .

2. Buy a perfect fall sweater.

3.  Make homemade applesauce.

4. Go to a college football game – preferably Rutgers, my alma mater.

5. Donate canned foods to a local food bank.

6. Make kale chips for the first time (Similar to this).

7. Read 3 books: Dad Is FatLet’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, and finally get around to  finish Fifty Shades of Grey.

8. Go to the Bronx Zoo with my boyfriend who has been patiently waiting to go, forever.

9. Walk the High Line, then revisit Hudson River Park in NYC.

10.  Be extra thankful.

What are some items on your Fall bucket list?

9/11 Tribute

{9/11 Light Tribute | Captured by A. Grasso}

9/11 is a very sad day that hits home.   I can remember the day exactly, I was sitting in my sixth grade class when we received the news that we were under attack.  We were only miles from where one of the attacks took place, and most of us were scared.  Many people we knew were in the twin towers. Yet, as the days continued to pass we kept hearing stories of people who were “supposed” to be there that day, yet for a bunch of reasons never made it into the towers.   I found this poem and it touched my heart knowing little things can change a persons life forever.

The head of a company survived 9/11 because
His son started kindergarten.

Another fellow was alive because it was
His turn to bring donuts.

One woman was late because her
Alarm clock didn’t go off in time.

One was late because of being stuck on the NJ Turnpike because of an auto accident.

One of them missed his bus.

One spilled food on her clothes and had to take time to change.

One’s car wouldn’t start.

One couldn’t get a taxi.

The one that struck me was the man
Who put on a new pair of shoes that morning,
Took the various means to get to work but before
He got there, he developed a blister on his foot.
He stopped at a drugstore to buy a Band-Aid.
That is why he is alive today..

Now when I am
Stuck in traffic,
Miss an elevator,
Turn back to answer a ringing telephone…
All the little things that annoy me,
I think to myself,

This is exactly where
I’m meant to be
At this very moment.
